What it does do is real and worth having: it increases circulation, reduces the perception of muscle soreness and stiffness, downshifts your nervous system after a hard session, and gives you a consistent, low-effort way to manage stress — which is one of the most underrated recovery variables in all of lifting.

Think of the sauna as a quality-of-life recovery tool, not a growth stimulus. If your sleep is a mess, your protein intake is inconsistent, and you're training through a fatigue hole, ten minutes of heat is not going to bail you out. For the outcomes lifters actually care about day to day — feeling less beat up, moving better the next session, getting your head right — heat exposure holds up reasonably well.

Research consistently shows that passive heat exposure increases blood flow to working and recently-worked muscle tissue, and that lifters using it post-training frequently report lower perceived soreness and stiffness in the following days. The honest caveat: a lot of the sauna recovery literature measures how you feel rather than how you perform. You've probably seen the claim that sauna use causes a large spike in growth hormone. That part is technically true — heat exposure does acutely elevate growth hormone. Here's the part nobody mentions: acute growth hormone spikes have never been shown to drive meaningful muscle growth in trained lifters. The same thing happens after a hard set of squats, after a fasted morning, and during deep sleep. The spike is a downstream signal, not the cause of hypertrophy.

Muscle is built by progressive mechanical tension, adequate protein, sufficient energy intake, and enough recovery to keep repeating the process. Nothing about sitting in a hot box changes any of those four inputs.

There is one interesting exception worth mentioning honestly: research into heat therapy during periods of immobilization or disuse — think a limb in a cast or a forced layoff — has shown some protective effect against muscle loss. When Should You Use the Sauna Around Training?

Timing matters less than people think, but there are a few clear rules.

After lifting — good. This is the most common and most sensible slot. Finish your session, cool down, then use the sauna. The heat won't undo your training stimulus, and the parasympathetic shift afterward helps you transition out of training mode.

On rest days — best. If you're serious about heat as a recovery tool rather than a post-workout ritual, standalone sessions on off days are the cleanest way to get the benefit without any interference or extra fatigue.
